- This is an update of the Travel Forum special discounts, as of August
- 23, 1993. It includes revised procedures for Auto Europe.
-
-
- (For special discounts offered on hotels, please see the file HOTEL.SAV
- in Travsig's library 0, General Interest.)
-
-
- Here are some discounted rates for members of Compuserve that have
- been negotiated by Jerry Schneiderman of The Travel Forum.
-
- Auto Europe has just started offering discounts, guaranteeing their
- rates to be lowest for rental cars in Europe, Caribbean, South Pacific,
- Australia and New Zealand. Then they take an additional 5% off for
- our members! (No special coupons/ID cards needed) If you can
- find a lower rate, they will beat it.
-
- Avis offers savings to our members worldwide.
-
- Alamo Rent A Car offers discounts in both the United States and
- their European locations, currently in the United Kingdom and
- Switzerland, and in other locations, as they open
-
- Hertz rates are good throughout the world.
-
- National rent a car discounts, through both National and its many
- affiliated companies, are good worldwide.
-
- Each company issues discount cards with our special ID number and
- an upgrade coupon. You should show the Travel Forum-CompuServe
- ID cards when picking up your rental cars.
-
-
- To get cards from the car renters, send a self-addressed stamped envelope
- to Jerry Schneiderman, 245 Eighth Avenue, NYC, NY 10011. You can ask
- for extra cards for friends, family and associates, but please include extra
- postage if you want many cards..
-
- If you're writing from outside the US, you can obtain an
- International Postal Coupon from your local post office. It can be
- exchanged here for return postage.
-
- If you include your CIS ID number you will be notified by email
- when new money savers are offered.
-
-
- Cruise America is the largest renter of RV/Motorhomes in the US and
- Canada, and offers our members a 10% discount..
-
-
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- AUTO EUROPE:
-
-
- For rentals in Europe, Caribbean, South Pacific, Australia, New Zealand
-
- Auto Europe promises Travel Forum/CompuServe members the
- lowest rates on car rentals anywhere they serve.
-
- Plus they'll deduct an additional 5% for our members.
-
- If you find a lower price for a comparable rental, Auto Europe says
- they will beat that price!
-
- No coupons are needed, just our discount ID number, which has now
- been changed to RID-02.
-
- Auto Europe's offices in Maine, USA can be reached by calling (800)
- 223-5555 (toll-free call within U.S.), Tel: (800) 458-9503 (toll-free
- call within Canada) or (207) 236-8235 from elsewhere.
-
-
- When calling Auto Europe, they would like you to have your Travsig
- discount number (RID-02) ready. As they've never given an
- association discount like this before, the reservations clerk might not
- understand what the ID number means until they access it on their screen.
- If there is any difficulty or confusion, just ask for a supervisor, who will
- know how to handle the reservation.
-
- The agent will need to know which country you are picking up in, the
- date, and the time...as well as the country where you are dropping off, the
- date, and the time.
-
- Auto Europe will quote you prices which include VAT tax and unlimited
- mileage. This is the "non-inclusive" rate. They will also quote the rate
- which includes VAT, unlimited mileage and insurance/waiver. This is
- the "inclusive" rate. Make sure that you know which rates are being
- quoted.
-
- Because this is a new venture for Auto Europe (offering a discount to Travel
- Forum members) there are still details to be worked out. **Make sure that
- the reservationist takes YOUR name and address, telephone number
- and fax number.** This is very important, as Auto Europe will be mailing
- or faxing you the documents you'll need to pick up your car.
-
- The agent will give you a confirmation number. This number is
- important and you should write it down. It will help Auto Europe people
- pull up your record if you call back with changes or questions.
-
- Auto Europe will then charge you a partial deposit. The balance will
- be paid locally, in local currency, when you return the car. Auto Europe
- acts as an agent for other car renters. If it ever happens that the other
- company, the one you pick up your car from, charges you more than the
- guaranteed rate for the car/terms, Auto Europe says that they will refund
- you the difference. To receive it...you MUST have a copy of your voucher,
- a copy of the rental contract showing what you paid for, and the copy of
- your credit card bill. These must be sent to Auto Europe customer service
- department.
-
- When currency fluctuations occur to your disadvantage, this is a great
- guarantee. If the fluctuations are in your favor, nothing need be done.
-
- If you have a fax machine, Auto Europe can send you a faxed voucher.
- A two-copy voucher will come in the mail. If you are leaving shortly,
- and will be using the faxed voucher, make a photocopy for yourself.
- This way if there any questions, you will still retain a copy.
-
- Again, please make sure they have your fax number and/or your address
- so they can send the voucher to you.
-
- Here's what Auto Europe says they will do if you find a price lower than theirs:
-
- If you have received a lower quote for the comparable rental from a different
- company, Auto Europe says they will beat it. Because they must research
- your claim, they will book at their price, and get back to you about the
- lower price. This is worth doing, because Auto Europe's bookings are
- cancelable and changeable with no penalty. Other companies' pre-pay
- programs have a penalty for cancellation or changes.
-
- For more extensive information on renting cars for use in Europe, there
- is a file in Library 8 of the Travel Forum called EUROPE.CAR. This file
- explains the different pricing factors when renting a car, including VAT
- taxes, car sizes, insurances/waivers, security and airport surcharges.
-
- If you need help with booking with Auto Europe, or are outside the U.S. and
- Canada and would like help with the booking, contact Mireille (Mimi) Petit,
- UID 70713,235, who has volunteered to help, by e-mail.

-
- ALAMO RENT A CAR:
-
-
- Alamo rentals include unlimited free miles nationwide and
- frequent flyer Credits (Delta, United, Alaska Air)
-
- Alamo's standard retail daily and weekend rates on U.S. rentals, and
- a discount of 10% on European car rentals. As of this writing, Alamo
- has locations in the United Kingdom and Switzerland, with more
- offices coming soon.
-
- This is the best discount that Alamo gives to any association. None
- get better rates than Travel Forum/CompuServe members get.
-
- Alamo's rates are most often lower than the other major car renters.
-
- The normal fees for additional drivers are waived when you rent
- using the special Travel Forum rate.
-
- Specialty cars are not included in this discount program
-
- Alamo is the only major car rental company that will rent to drivers
- under the age of 25. Alamo will rent to those as young as 21, but at
- an additional charge.
-
- Peak period pricing may apply (Holidays, Special Events, etc)
- Similar or larger cars may be substituted.
-
- Alamo recommends that you obtain an "Alamo Travel Forum ID Membership
- Card", which you can get by sending a self addressed stamped envelope
- to Jerry Schneiderman, 245 Eighth Avenue, NYC, NY 10011. Please
- include your CIS ID number so we can inform you of new offers.
-
- These cards include a coupon for a free upgrade on your next rental.
- If you need more than one card, just ask. If you are renting with
- Alamo and do not have a membership card or time to get one, the
- best thing to do is to bring along some proof of CIS membership, just
- in case it's asked for. A paid bill, credit card receipt, or a copy of CIS
- magazine should satisfy the counter people, though you are better off
- with the membership card.
-
- You can book through Alamo or through your regular travel agent.
- Here's how:
-
- To get the Association rates, less the 15%, you should:
- First ask for Rate Plan BY
- Then give your Travel Forum ID# 261928
- For discounted weekend rates, give Rate Plan A1 instead.
-
- You must book 24 hours in advance of picking up your car.
-
- As always, there's no such thing as a rate that's always the lowest one.
- Ask for lower rates. Shop around.
-

-

- discount of 15% from their economical "Easy Corporate Rates" on daily
- rentals with unlimited mileage. Rates vary from city to city but the

- either 5% from any promotional rates in effect or 10% from the

- domestic US reservations. The number for international reservations is
- 1-800-331-1084.

- early is always a good idea.

- can almost always show them any other proof of your membership in

- payment receipt or a copy of CompuServe Magazine with your name on
- the mailing label. Of course the membership card is preferred. You can
- get cards for you, friends, family and associates by sending a self-

- How to Try To Save On One Way Rentals:
-
- Date: 02-Aug-93
- From: ROB FINGAR/PDX [76260,3424]
-
- The best way to one-way at a cheaper rate on one-way rentals is to
- either call the location directly and talk to the "fleet manager." Or
- try to negotiate at time of rental. Also, smaller locations have a
- better handle on what cars need to go where. One other point to
- consider, is the company sitting on a lot of cars? The more cars the
- better your bargaining power.
